Why Signing 5ft 11inch Forward Could Be a Master Stroke By Ed Woodward

After finishing the season strongly , Manchester United will look to consolidate their good form for the new season too. Earlier in the season, The Red Devils looked short of ideas and also personnel as their season was in real danger of petering out.

The January signing of Bruno Fernandes, however, has been a masterstroke. The 26-year old Portuguese player has been in remarkable form. The former Sporting Lisbon man has scored or assisted 11 in his last six games.

It’s not just his personal performance that’s helped Man United, the form Anthony Martial, who many see as talented but yet to fulfil his potential, has also improved too. In fact, the 24-year old Martial is currently enjoying his best goal return (20 goals at the time of writing) since joining the club as a very highly rated teenager in 2015.

Martial is part of an impressive front three that includes England starlets Mason Greenwood (who will no doubt be called to the National side soon) and Marcus Rashford (who is an established England international).

To complement their attacking front three they have Daniel James and Odio Igahlo in reserve. As impressive as both have been, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly has set his sights on signing Jadon Sancho, who has just gone from strength to strength whilst at German giants Borussia Dortmund.

As much as the signing will be welcomed by fans, the singing of an out and out centre forward is needed most. Step forward, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson. The former Coventry man is a good finisher and has an impressive goal return of 62 goals in 161 games.

That’s better than Anthony Martial’s 49 goals in 141 games. Of course, it must be noted that the 24-year old has been out wide for several of these games, so the stats can lie, but it’s clear that Wilson is a good finisher because it must be factored in he’s had a couple of spells out injured.

This is the flip side of getting a player like Wilson (his injury record). Clubs like Chelsea were linked with the 28-year old in previous transfer windows, only for no move to materialise.

Being English, Callum Wilson could prove to be expensive, but having said that due to Bournemouth’s league status (fighting relegation) a cheaper deal could maybe be agreed if The Cherries do go down.

Crucially, the Bournemouth frontman has been in the Premier League for a few seasons and should fit straight into the squad. A signing from abroad could take time to adapt.

A first-choice starter the 28-year old Callum Wilson isn’t, with the greatest respect, current forwards Greenwood, Rashford and Martial would and should figure ahead of him. A title-winning team is built by having strength in depth.

United did try to sign Wilson’s team-mate and their former player Josh King in the last window, but with the greatest respect, The Reds would be better suited to having Wilson in their squad, he’s what’s needed more at the moment. It could be a masterstroke by Ed Woodward

The great Manchester United team of 1999 had strength in depth. If this team is to be successful, this will be needed again. That’s why I think Callum Wilson should be the man, do you agree? Let us know in the comments.
