An astonishing rumor is moving around the market. According to many reports, PSG’s legendary defender, Thiago Silva, could become a Chelsea player within the next month. Fans and football ecosystem is divided whether this deal should go through or not. He brings positives and negatives with him. Today, we look at the three reasons why Silva should join Chelsea.
Old but gold!
Thiago Silva will be turning 36 in September this year, but what he brings with himself is tons of experience. He has earned 89 caps for Brazil and won eight league titles with PSG and AC Milan. There are obvious concerns that he won’t be able to cope with Premier League’s speed. But Premier League teams still have center-backs who are not quick. Wes Morgan wasn’t a runner when Leicester City won the title. Also, I don’t believe that Harry Maguire is fast. Still, he is the first-choice for Manchester United and England. Every player does not offer everything, but one should look at the positives more.
Leadership
Willian and Pedro, two of the experienced players, have left Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s future rest on young shoulders like Timo Werner, Mason Mount, Reece James, Pulisic, etc. Thiago can be a perfect source of light for these youngsters. He has captained his national team Brazil and other clubs. He can play a similar role to what Vincent Company played for Manchester City in the last two years.
Vincent Company didn’t play every game but always helped youngsters like John Stones and Aymeric Laporte. Also, he performed amazingly well whenever he was called to start. Silva’s wealth of experience of playing at the top level can give a lot to the team as a unit. Young players would have a player to look up at during stressful situations.
Quality at the back
It is no doubt that Thiago Silva is once in a decade center-back. His records at AC Milan, PSG, and Brazil speak volumes of his knowledge. He might not have the legs, but has a football brain. Frank Lampard is a young manager. He needs a figure like John Terry in the dressing room, and Thiago Silva can be that figure.
Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, all are fine center-backs. But, I think Chelsea requires more than just ‘fine’ defenders at this time. They are competing in FA Cup, EFL Cup, Premier League, and the Champions League. They need a bigger and better squad. Thiago Silva can play as a CB and derive better performances from his fellow center-back.
