Manchester United spent a fair amount of money last summer bolstering their defensive and attacking options with Harry Maguire and Daniel James, however, as we all know at this point, those signings haven’t particularly worked out well for United considering their performances since the start of the season.
The January transfer window is another chance for United to get things right in terms of transfers, on that note, here’s a look at 3 reasons why Manchester United must splash the cash this month;
The Top Four
Manchester United have dropped a lot of important points this season against what many would consider ‘weaker opposition’, because of this, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men find themselves sitting outside of the top four, behind Chelsea who look likely to clinch a Champions League spot at the end of the season.
Despite United’s inconsistent performances they are currently just 5 points behind 4th-placed Chelsea, a gap that could be easily closed over the course of a month or two if United stay consistent.
However, for United to truly stay consistent throughout the course of the second half of the season, they need to spend quite a bit of money on some key signings.
Signing a couple of ‘superstar’ players will bolster United’s chances of making it into the top four, hence; Solskjaer would do well to make big money moves before the transfer window comes to a close.
Paul Pogba’s Situation
There’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding Paul Pogba’s future at Manchester United, that uncertainty also extends towards Pogba’s fitness.
The Frenchman has featured in just 7 Premier League games for Manchester United this season, and that number might not increase by much over the next couple of months.
Pogba’s absence from the team’s lineup has played a role in United’s poor performances this season considering the incredible amounts of creativity the Frenchman brings to United’s midfield.
On that note, Manchester United need to spend big this month to sign a player who can replicate Pogba’s influence at the club.
The Squad’s Overall Quality
Player for player, when you compare Manchester United’s squad with a team like Manchester City or even Liverpool, the difference in quality is staggering.
Both City and Liverpool have players that could quite literally walk into any club in the world and secure a regular starting berth – the same can’t be said for Manchester United bar Paul Pogba.
United’s squad is lacking in quality, which is why they’ve struggled to find consistency this season.
Signing some big players before the transfer window comes to an end will bolster the quality of United’s squad, giving them the ability to go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the Premier League and beyond.
