Chelsea player who rejected Aston Villa could complete €40m move elsewhere

Date:

Aston Villa are enjoying a lavish and fruitful summer transfer window as they aim to build a side capable of challenging the top teams in Europe in the upcoming 2024-25 football campaign. Unai Emery’s side has spent the most of any team in the English top flight this summer.

The Villans surprised several sides by securing the coveted fourth spot in the 2023-24 Premier League standings, earning themselves a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Given the quality of the opposition, it is no surprise that the Midlands club is making the most of the transfer window.

Their summer spending is showing no signs of slowing down given that a record bid was made to secure the services of Chelsea star Conor Gallagher. Unfortunately for Villa, the English international rejected the opportunity to move to Villa Park as revealed by Fabrizio Romano via X.

Gallagher could now be heading to Spain, with Atletico Madrid’s €40 million offer already accepted by Chelsea, according to a recent report from The Guardian.

Having failed to agree on a contract extension, Chelsea are ready to cash in on the 24-year-old. A deal was agreed with Aston Villa in June, one that would have seen the latter shatter their club transfer record. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

With the player having declined the opportunity, this more or less ends Villa’s pursuit of Gallagher, at least for this summer. A versatile presence in the midfield, the English star would have been a bundle of energy in the middle of the park.

Unai Emery’s sides are tactically quite astute and Gallagher could have helped them elevate their talents to a new level. More so, his versatility would also have offered the Spanish tactician more options to tinker with his strategies.

Gallagher, on the other hand, now has the opportunity to make use of his energetic playing style under Diego Simeone. Whether he will ultimately make the switch or have a late change of heart and stay put at Stamford Bridge remains to be seen.
