The papers read that it was the apocalypse on the morning of 14th November; Italy had failed to reach the World Cup finals for the first time since 1958. It is a great national shame and a great shame for the football traditionalists. The question at hand is who will replace manager Gian Piero and we take a look at five of the options.

Mazzarri has an outside chance of getting the top job in Italy and would not be a bad alternative if the other men cannot be prised away from their commitments. After being fired from Watford, he is available now and has a decent personal background in his managerial career. His time with Napoli was quite successful as he won the Coppa Italia in 2012 and was the runner-up in the following Supercoppa before the 2012/13 season began. During his Napoli days, he also won the prestigious Enzo Bearzot award in 2012.

With his last job with Watford ending in failure, it might be time for him to turn his back on club management and try his hand at international management. However, he might have to convince the powers that he has a master plan for Italy to make it to Euro 2020.
