Manchester United could sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka upgrade through proposed swap deal

Date:

Manchester United have traveled to the United States for the start of their three-game pre-season tour. The 20-time English champions have enjoyed a fine summer transfer window thus far, adding Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro to the squad.

With co-owners INEOS looking to rebuild the squad after a woeful last season that saw Erik ten Hag’s side finish eighth in the Premier League, more incomings are certainly expected before the transfer window slams shut.

After reinforcing the central defensive unit with the acquisition of Yoro, Manchester United want to address the right-back area. Bayern Munich’s Noussair Mazraoui has emerged as a target for the Premier League giants but he is on the brink of joining West Ham United.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, and the club is open to selling him. West Ham United initially expressed interest in signing him but have now shifted their focus towards Noussair Mazraoui, effectively ending Wan-Bissaka’s potential move to the London Stadium. As a result, the Manchester United right-back is now reportedly favoring a move to the Italian champions, Inter Milan.

According to reputed Athletic journalist David Ornstein, intermediaries have discussed an idea that would see Wan-Bissaka move to Inter while Dumfries would join Erik ten Hag’s squad at Old Trafford. However, as things stand, that possible switch is not in the advanced stages.

Ten Hag wants an upgrade on Wan-Bissaka to cover and compete with Diogo Dalot, who was the club’s Player of the Year last season. Dumfries would fit that category perfectly, owing to his attacking prowess shown under Simeone Inzaghi at Inter Milan.

Operating as a right wing-back, the Dutchman has racked up 11 goals and 20 assists in 132 appearances for Inter Milan. He made 31 league appearances in the 2023/24 season as the Nerazzurri won the Scudetto.

Going by his aforementioned goal contributions, it is easy to comprehend why Dumfries would be a massive improvement on Wan-Bissaka and help Ten Hag’s side going forward. The 28-year-old, who enjoyed an excellent Euro 2024, could be open to joining the Red Devils and working under his compatriot Ten Hag after tasting solid success in Italy.

From Manchester United’s perspective, if there is a possibility to pursue such a swap deal, INEOS should do everything possible to make it happen.
