Only T20: England Thrash New Zealand by 56 Runs

Date:

England thrashed New Zealand by 56 runs in the only Twenty20 international at Old Trafford in Manchester on Tuesday.

Powered by Joe Root’s brisk 46-ball 68, England posted 191- 7 and bundled New Zealand for 135 in 16.2 overs to wrap up a comprehensive win.

The Blackcaps looked well-placed at 82-2 while chasing but failed to sustain momentum and a collapse saw them lose remaining eight wickets for just 53 runs.

Kane Williamson top scored for the visitors with 37-ball 56 while skipper Brendon McCullum made 35 off 15 balls. Ross Taylor (17) was the only other kiwi batsman to reach double figures.

For England, seam duo David Walley and Mark Wood both bagged three wickets apiece.

Earlier, after England elected to bat, Jason Roy got them off to a flamboyant start and plundered 23 off 13 balls before getting run out.

Alex Hales (27) and Root combined for a 51-run second-wicket stand before spinner Mitchell Santner struck twice on in the same over to reduce the hosts to 79-3 in nine overs.

Skipper Eoin Morgan (4) fell to pacer Matt Henry two overs later before stubborn Root found an able ally in Sam Billings (21).

The 43-run fifth-wicket partnership between the pair ended when Billings was caught behind off pacer Mitchell McClenaghan.

Root brought up his 2nd T20 half-century off 36 balls with five boundaries and a six and hit three more fours before caught by Martin Guptill at deep cover off McClenaghan.

Down the order, Stokes hit a brisk24 off 13 balls to give a late boost to the total.

England had won the preceding five match one-day international series 3-2 while their two-Test series was drawn.
