Liverpool currently sit 6th in the Premier League, a whopping 14 points behind the leaders Manchester City. They’ve been branded as potential contenders, but the fact is, City are running away with the league and if Liverpool doesn’t make alterations to the squad in January, they’ll fall further behind. Alongside new signings, there are players the Reds should sell in the winter window to ensure their squad is in its best position to compete.

Here are 3 players Liverpool should offload in January.

1Dejan Lovren

Dejan Lovren

The inclusion of the Croatian on this list should come as a no surprise to anyone. The centre-back has been cited as the sole reason Liverpool have displayed such a poor defensive record this season. In particular, his 37-minute disaster show against Tottenham at Wembley has been highlighted as reasons for the 28-year-old to be sold.

This season already, the Reds have conceded 18 goals, the most out of the all top seven teams. Such a record will only hamper Jurgen Klopp’s men over the season. Liverpool did all they could to rectify their defensive woes in the summer, as they signed Joel Matip. But without a partner of similar quality, the signing was rendered useless. They did try to sign to Virgil van Dijk from Southampton but that failed, and they were consequently left with Dejan Lovren as a first choice defender.  To be quite frank, Dejan Lovren is not of the required standard to be at a title contending team. If he’s not sold and replaced in January, Liverpool will continue to underachieve.
